Im frühen Mittelalter waren Landfamilien Selbstversorger, während Städte auf externe Versorgung angewiesen waren. Landwirtschaftliche Verbesserungen führten zu Überschüssen, die städtische Zentren ermöglichten. Dort entstanden Märkte, um die Bevölkerung mit Lebensnotwendigem zu versorgen und Güter zu handeln.
