Neben seinen berühmtesten Werken, der „Mona Lisa“ und dem „Abendmahl“, zeugen seine zahlreichen Madonnenbilder von seiner erfindungsreichen Schaffenskraft. Er schrieb: „Gemalte Bewegung, die dem geistigen oder emotionalen Zustand entspricht, soll mit großer Lebendigkeit gezeigt werden.“
