With a living will, you decide for yourself how you wish to be treated and cared for medically should you lose your mental capacity and become unable to make decisions.
An advance healthcare directive sets out in detail how you wish to be treated and cared for if you are unable to make decisions. You decide for yourself which life-sustaining and supportive treatments you want and which you do not. The living will will only be implemented if you are no longer able to express your wishes or are unable to make decisions.
A living will contains various instructions and wishes:
- Instructions regarding medical treatment and care
- Representatives
- Statement of values
- Extended living will: personal wishes
