Bicycle theft

How to protect your bike

Every year, tens of thousands of bikes are stolen in Switzerland. A good lock and the right parking spot can make things much more difficult for thieves. It’s particularly worth taking a few simple precautions with high-quality bikes and e-bikes.

  • Lock it securely: Always secure your bike with a high-quality chain or U-lock. Make sure to lock the frame and, if possible, one of the wheels as well. Even better: secure the bike to a firmly anchored bike rack or another fixed object.
  • Choose your parking spot wisely: Where possible, park your bike in a clearly visible, busy and designated area. Overnight, if possible, store it in a lockable cellar, bike storage room or garage. Make sure to lock the bike there as well.
  • Protect accessories and your e-bike: Secure expensive components and easily removable parts. Where possible, do not leave any valuable items on the bike. If you have an e-bike, you can remove the battery and store it safely if you are away for a longer period.
  • Register your bike and keep a record of the details: Make a note of the make, model, colour and frame number of your bike, and keep the proof of purchase and, if possible, a photo. Registering your bike can also help ensure that a found bike is returned to its owner.
  • Check your insurance: Depending on your insurance policy and the circumstances, bicycle theft may be covered by your home contents insurance. Check, particularly for high-value bicycles and e-bikes, whether your cover and the sum insured are sufficient.
  • Always report theft: If your bike has been stolen, report it to the police as soon as possible. Details such as the make, colour, frame number and any distinctive accessories will be helpful. Reporting the theft also increases the chance that a recovered bike can be returned to you.
  • Do not leave valuables in the bike basket: You should not leave bags, rucksacks, smartphones and other valuables unattended in the bike basket or on the luggage rack. Take them with you, even if you are only parking your bike for a short time.
