Increase in the take-up rate of supplementary benefits

In Switzerland, the three-pillar system and supplementary benefits (EL) ensure the livelihood of older people. However, many eligible individuals do not apply for the EL. Studies show that this affects up to a third of those aged over 65 in Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft.

The aim is therefore to make it easier to access state social benefits. People in the canton of Basel-Stadt who may be affected are identified using tax records and contacted in writing. Pro Senectute in both Basel cantons checks eligibility and provides support in completing the applications.

Are you entitled to supplementary benefits?

If you have received a letter from the Basel-Stadt Social Security Office dated February 2026 or later, please do get in touch with us. We provide comprehensive information to AHV recipients with their legal residence in Basel-Stadt regarding their potential entitlement to supplementary benefits. We explain in clear terms:

  • Under what circumstances it is worth applying
  • What support you will receive if your application is successful
  • What documents are required for the application

Pro Senectute for both Basel cantons will assess your eligibility and help you complete the application forms.
